What Tools Do Consultants Actually Use?

Unsurprisingly, the answer is “it depends.” Different consultants use different things, but I would say 90% or more of all consulting I have ever seen happens within the Microsoft ecosystem.

Whose Tools Get Used?

The first decision isn’t just what tools to use, but whose tools to use.

  • Short-term projects: Consultants typically use their firm’s tools. Getting access to client systems can take weeks or even months.
  • Long-term projects: Consultants usually get access to the client’s internal systems. This keeps all data within the client’s ecosystem throughout the project.

The Core Tools

About 90% of consulting work happens within the Microsoft ecosystem.

Two tools dominate:

  • PowerPoint: Perfect for status reports and executive updates. Almost every consulting deliverable ends up as a PowerPoint presentation.
  • Excel: The workhorse for financial analysis, project plans, and tracking risks and dependencies week over week.

Proprietary Tools

Most consulting firms also develop their own internal tools. These specialized programs help teams work more efficiently on engagements. Some firms even license these tools to clients for their own use.
