Consulting can feel like a mysterious world from the outside. To make it clearer, I’ve put together a series of short posts and videos that break down what consultants actually do day to day, the value they bring to organizations, and how their work creates impact.
On this page, you’ll find:
- A quick explanation of each topic I’ve covered
- Links to all the posts in one place
- Easy access to watch and explore the videos at your own pace
Think of this as your one-stop guide to understanding the consulting profession — simple, practical, and straight to the point.

Benchmarking
On today’s edition of #whatdoconsultantsdowednesdays I’m talking about benchmarking.
Given consultants tend to specialize in a specific industry or function they are often brought in to help clients understand their market position and how they stack up against competitors
Client confidentiality is of the utmost importance so strong consultants are always mindful of sharing their experience without divulging client secrets
In the last few years we’ve seen the rise of software assisted benchmarking and more recently AI assisted benchmarking.

Audit
A topic I have no practical experience in but like a true consultant know enough to give a bird’s eye view and hit talking points
🔎 Audit at its most basic level is verifying something happened like regulations were followed or financial statements were produced
A key component of an audit is that it must come from a neutral third party who is independent and able to provide an unbiased perspective.

Strategy And Implementation
🎯 Strategy
- WHAT to do and WHY (ex. WHAT business should we acquire and WHY)
- Typically shorter term engagements (weeks or months)
🏗️ Implementation
- HOW to do it and WHEN (ex. HOW/WHEN we’ll acquire then integrate the business)
- Typically longer term engagements (months or years)
Sometimes there is tension between the pie in the sky strategic plan and the on the ground implementation but really not a big issue for seasoned consultants.
